Feed Safety Management System

Safe Feed
leads to
Safe Food

Feed, is part of the food chain. Animal feed is the important component to ensure the sustainable production of safe and affordable animal proteins. According to FDA, rapidly growing populations, along with increased urbanization and income, is expected to rise the consumption of animal products by 70% in 2050.

Feed safety is a prerequisite to ensure animal health and welfare, which eventually contributing to food safety and human health. In fact, feed production has the shared value and a shared responsibility in order to product a safe food for human consumption. There are several cases happen in the history that related to animal feedings such as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy; Foot-and-Mouth Disease; dioxin, mycotoxin, E.coli O157:H7 contaminations; and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Thus, it important to have a quality assurance system integrating with food safety elements to ensure safe feed production.

While the feed producer can select the food safety management system to control food safety; however, there are some customization needed for the requirements. For example, in ISO 22000 system, the PRP program shall be supported by ISO 22002-6 Prerequisite Programmes on Food Safety- Part 6: Feed and Animal Food Production. Our professional team has assisted feed producer in obtaining ISO 22000 certification with the specific requirements needed to run in  feed production.

Besides the food safety management system, the feed producer can also select  a Feed Safety Management System that is recognized globally – GMP+. Today, over 18.000 companies in more than eighty countries are GMP+ certified.

About GMP+

GMP+ is a certification scheme that integrate ISO standards, HACCP and other elements that guarantees feed safety, reliability, quality and sustainability. A GMP+ certificate is considered to be a license to sell in more and more countries.

In case the feed producer is focus mainly on aqua feed and active in exporting activities, besides GMP+, there is another scheme that is specifically for aqua feed, which is Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP).

About BAP

BAP is a certification scheme to ensure producers are following best practices to deliver farmed seafood safely and responsibly. This certification scheme is seafood specific and addresses the four key areas of sustainability—environmental, social, food safety, and animal health & welfare—at each step of the aquaculture production chain.

By 2030, 62% of all seafood produced for human consumption will come from aquaculture. Today it is more than 50 percent. By 2050, the demand for animal protein will increase by 52%. To ensure sustainable and safe feed production, BAP certification is a good choice as it is bench-marked by internationally recognized third parties, GSSI, GFSI, GSCP.
